Zero to Hero – ISSA Inshore SKipper + VHF(SRC)

Join our Zero to Hero intensive 12‑day / 11‑night liveaboard course in the Sea of Cortez and progress from crew to competent Inshore Skipper while earning the ISSA Inshore Skipper and VHF Short Range Certificates. Designed for serious learners, this hands‑on program blends practical seamanship, passage planning, night navigation, emergency procedures and systems troubleshooting — all delivered aboard a high‑performance training yacht with a maximum of four students for focused instruction.

Course overview — what you’ll gain

Over twelve days you’ll master sail trim, rigging and sail handling, close‑quarters boat handling, anchoring and mooring, traditional and electronic navigation, passage planning that integrates weather and tides, collision avoidance (IRPCS), watchkeeping and night passages, VHF radio operation and distress procedures, basic maintenance and troubleshooting, and emergency protocols including man‑overboard drills. Practical exercises throughout the course ensure you log real sea miles and gain confidence under sail.

The next Zero to Hero course is scheduled for 7–18 February — two spots remain available, so book soon to secure your place. The following session runs 22 April–3 May with four slots open; if you’d like to join either course, request availability and booking details now and we’ll send the syllabus, cabin options and payment instructions.

Vessel & life onboard

Training is conducted aboard a high‑performance, well‑equipped yacht (modern hull, responsive rigging and comfortable three‑cabin layout) chosen for its balance of stability, speed and onboard comfort. The yacht features two ergonomic helm stations, spacious cockpit for practical drills, a fully appointed galley and a cozy saloon for classroom sessions and debriefs. Accommodations are double cabins with shared heads, providing comfortable rest between practical days on deck. Starlink internet keeps you connected for weather briefings and communications.

Locations & seamanship practice areas

We use the Sea of Cortez for its sheltered anchorages, clear snorkeling sites and variable sailing conditions ideal for training: Ensenada Grande, Balandra, Caleta Partida, El Candelero, Los Islotes and select northern anchorages like San Francisquito, San José and Los Gatos when weather permits. These areas provide tidal challenges, anchoring variety and wildlife encounters while keeping safety and student learning front and center.

Gourmet liveaboard experience

Meals are included throughout the course. Our onboard cook prepares daily breakfasts, snacks, lunches and dinners using fresh, locally sourced ingredients where possible. Expect energizing breakfasts (fruit, bread, eggs or chilaquiles), light lunches (ceviche, salads, grilled fish) and hearty dinners (seafood pastas, fish en papillote, regional specialties). Non‑alcoholic beverages are provided. The culinary program supports nutrition for active learning and fosters crew cohesion; read more in our Catered Sailing Holidays post for menu examples and our approach to sourcing and sustainability.

Instructor team & certification

Courses are led by ISSA‑accredited instructors with extensive offshore experience. Our head instructor has logged over 20,000 nm, holds instructor accreditation, and brings a strong background in seamanship and safety. On successful completion you’ll receive ISSA Inshore Skipper recommendation and the VHF Short Range Certificate — documented proof of competencies for chartering and further training.
